TabSplit Privacy Policy
Your privacy is paramount. This document details how TabSplit handles your data.
This Privacy Policy describes how TabSplit ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application and related services (collectively, the "Service"). We are committed to protecting your privacy.
Important Note: TabSplit is designed to be privacy-friendly. We do not require you to create user accounts, collect your email address, phone number, or any other personal identifiers (like your real name outside of a session-specific nickname). The app does not collect personal information that directly identifies you.
1. Information We Collect
When you use TabSplit, we collect the following limited types of information:
- Receipt Data: When you use our AI-Powered Receipt Scanning feature, you upload images of your receipts. Our service extracts item names, quantities, prices, and potentially tip amounts from these images. This extracted data is stored. The original receipt image itself is also stored.
- Session Data: When you create or join a splitting session, we generate and store a unique, temporary session code. This code allows for real-time collaboration. We do not associate these sessions or codes with any personal identifiers of yours.
- Participant Nicknames (Non-Personal): Within a session, you enter a nickname for yourself and can add nicknames for others ("People") who are part of the bill. These nicknames are only used within that specific session for the purpose of bill splitting. They are not linked to your real identity, nor are they used across sessions to identify you.
- Usage Data (Aggregated & Anonymized): We collect limited, non-identifiable log data related to the performance and usage of our backend services (e.g., successful API calls, errors). This data is aggregated and anonymized to ensure it cannot be traced back to any individual.
We do NOT collect:
- Your name, email address, phone number, or any other personally identifiable information.
- Your device ID, IP address (beyond what is necessary for immediate communication, i.e., to facilitate real-time communication between your device and our servers for the duration of a session), or precise location data.
- Any information that would allow us to identify you as an individual user across different sessions or devices.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the collected information primarily for the following purposes:
- Provide and operate the TabSplit Service:
- To process your uploaded receipt images and extract itemized data.
- To enable real-time collaboration and synchronization of bill splitting within a single, temporary session.
- To allow you to assign items, manage nicknames, and set tips within a session.
- To generate and provide detailed PDF summaries of split bills.
- Improve Our AI Models and Service (Primary Purpose): The receipt images and the extracted/edited itemized data are retained solely for the purpose of training and improving our AI models. This helps us enhance the accuracy and performance of our receipt scanning and data extraction features for all users in the future. This data is retained indefinitely after being de-identified through robust anonymization techniques, meaning it cannot be linked back to you, the individual user, at any point.
- Maintain and troubleshoot the Service: To monitor for errors, diagnose problems, and ensure the stability and functionality of the application.
- Security: To maintain the integrity and security of the Service and prevent misuse of the session codes.
3. How Your Information is Shared
- With Session Participants: Information within a splitting session (receipt data, item assignments, participant nicknames, tip details) is shared in real-time with all individuals who join that specific session using the unique session code. This is a core function of TabSplit's collaborative nature.
- Service Providers: We use third-party services that assist in operating our Service.
- AI Receipt Extraction: We send your receipt image data to a third-party AI service (e.g., Mistral AI service) for data extraction. This service processes the image to return itemized data. This data is not linked to any personal identifiers.
- Hosting and Infrastructure: We use hosting providers to store our data, including your uploaded images, session data, and extracted itemized data. These providers process data according to our instructions and their own privacy policies.
- Aggregated and Anonymized Data: We may share aggregated and anonymized data (e.g., general statistics about app usage or AI model performance) with third parties for research, marketing, or analytical purposes. This data cannot be used to identify any individual user.
- Legal Compliance and Protection: We may disclose information if required by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities. We may also disclose information to protect our rights, property, or safety, or the rights, property, or safety of others.
- Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of all or a portion of our assets, the data we collect may be transferred to the acquiring entity, subject to continued adherence to this Privacy Policy.
We do NOT sell any of your data to third parties.
4. Data Retention
Your session data, receipt images, and extracted itemized data are retained for the purpose of operating the Service and primarily for training and improving our AI models. Because this data is vital for our model improvement, it is retained indefinitely after being de-identified through robust anonymization techniques, meaning it cannot be linked back to you, the individual user, at any point.
Session codes are temporary and become inactive after a period of disuse.
5. Your Choices and Data Management
Because TabSplit does not collect personal identifiers, we cannot associate specific data with a particular individual after it has been stored. You control the content you upload and the nicknames you enter within a specific session.
If you are the session creator (administrator), you have controls within the app to:
- Edit extracted item data.
- Add or remove items.
- Add, rename, or delete nicknames from the session. Deleting a nickname will unassign any items associated with it.
6. Data Security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures, including secure data storage and the use of unique, temporary session codes, to help protect the information we collect from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. However, no internet transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Children's Privacy
TabSplit is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personally identifiable information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have inadvertently collected personal data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page within the app or on our website. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
